Tesla’s manufacturing engineering team is developing cutting-edge processes to produce high-quality vehicles efficiently and safely. The Coatings team is hiring a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer at Gigafactory Austin, TX, to design and develop conveyance, material handling, and manual processes for coating applications.
This role involves process development, specification, validation, optimization of critical process parameters, design for manufacturing, and equipment specification and installation. The engineer will collaborate with internal teams, external vendors, and technology partners to drive conveyance development from concept to production. A solid understanding of manufacturing engineering principles, proficiency in 2D/3D CAD, and a focus on design optimization is essential. This position requires 25% domestic and international travel.
- Lead the development of optimized conveyance and material handling systems from concept to serial production, simplifying the manufacturing process through efficient design
- Research and develop advanced conveyance technologies, including strategy, trials, and testing to influence system and product design
- Oversee conveyance release by defining equipment specifications, manufacturing instructions, workstation and line layouts, product trials, and prototype production management
- Develop material flow models to project headcount, assess congestion, execute buffer quantities, and ensure feasibility for new products and shops
- Design manual process solutions while modeling automated alternatives, collaborating with internal teams to build business cases
- Develop cost-effective, sustainable solutions for part presentation, packing density, and material flow in both automated and manual systems
- Lead line design, process verification, and manufacturability analysis, using statistical tools and risk assessments to optimize performance and minimize costs
- 5+ years of experience in high-volume manufacturing, specializing in automated finishing and coating processes for consumer products
- Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Experience developing and working with functional and aesthetic coating processes, including automotive paint and powder coating
- Expertise in designing, installing, and commissioning high-volume conveyance and material handling systems, including overhead and floor conveyors, automation-powered equipment, AGVs, and rail-guided vehicles
- Strong background in line layout, concept development, industrial engineering methods, new product introduction, and process optimization in high-volume manufacturing
- Proficiency in designing mechanical equipment, fixtures, and tooling using CAD, interpreting mechanical drawings and electrical schematics, and applying automation and safety standards, including PFMEA development and deployment
- Skilled in CAD software (Catia, SolidWorks, Inventor, Navisworks, Revit, or AutoCAD) for designing conveyance and material handling systems, with experience using 3D dynamic simulation software (WinMod)
