The Lithium & Recycling (LiR) group, under Cell Engineering is responsible for the reliable and efficient flow of all battery materials from Tesla’s factories and Service locations to approved battery reclamation & recycling facilities. The Battery Recycling Teardown Technician reports to the Operations Supervisor. They are responsible for pretreatment activities (depollution, discharging, and dismantling) of recovered Tesla products for further mechanical processing in Battery Recycling Program. The Teardown Technician will test and analyze the battery packs, and then follow provided process instructions, schematic diagrams, and mechanical drawings to perform the teardown. They also work with the engineering team to identify process improvements, implement corrective/preventive actions, help develop new teardown instructions, and work to hand-written and verbal instructions when necessary. Teardown Technicians use hand tools and larger machinery to evaluate the condition of each battery pack, then safely disassemble the pack into individual modules.
- Understanding of the functional operation of the subassemblies as well as the finished product, Work from complex and detailed manufacturing documentation and/or verbal and written instructions
- Work with, and help develop specialized fixtures, test equipment, and procedures; Collect data, update and maintain electronic and written records
- Proficient with hand tools and miscellaneous power tools, including precision measuring equipment, electrical test equipment, and computer databases
- Proficient with larger shop machinery (hoists, lift tables, hydraulic presses)
- Working knowledge of high voltage DC battery systems, or basic electronics and DC electrical systems
- Operate forklifts
- Proficient with computer tools, including Word, Excel, QuickBase, and Outlook
- Perform physically demanding work for up to 12 hours a day, including lifting up to 50 pounds for an extended period of time, bending, reaching, climbing, and working in various weather conditions
- Ability to perform repetitious duties while standing for long periods. Ability to lift 30-50 pounds
- Work location is outdoors
- Experience with semi-automated manufacturing equipment is highly desirable; Ability to read and understand manufacturing instructions, electrical diagrams, and mechanical drawings
- Must have command of the English language, both written and verbal
