What to Expect

Job Summary:

As a key member of the motor research team, the Motor Design & Launch Engineer will be responsible for researching and developing permanent magnet for electric motors. This person will work closely with the motor design team and magnet vendors to develop innovative magnet solutions and introduce latest magnet technologies to Tesla’s and exiting product line and new design. This person will also work closely with manufacturing team for easier rotor manufacturing and higher quality through innovative design.

What You’ll Do
  • Work cross functionally to introduce latest magnet technologies into Tesla’s production line and research pipeline, including prototyping, validation, change control, production trial and fleet trial
  • Analyze permanent magnet behavior inside electric motors with finite element simulation
  • Define magnet specifications using simulation and testing data to meet the motor requirement in real world driving
  • Design and monitor magnet manufacturing process with magnet vendors to meet the design targets
  • Adjust magnet specifications to achieve higher production quality and lower cost
  • Perform testing and validation of new magnet and new magnet vendors in existing motor line and for new motor development
  • Manage & perform magnet level testing to understand partial demagnetization, with and without heavy rare earth diffusion
  • Develop magnet with controlled coercivity gradient under diffusion
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, similar fields or equivalent experience
  • Strong mathematical and physical understanding on electrical machinery
  • Expertise on finite element simulation
  • Deep understanding of permanent magnet materials and irreversible demagnetization
  • Strong Matlab or Python programming skills
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Experience in electric motor design or manufacturing

    Expected Compensation

    $84,000 - $234,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
